Tales of love, friendship, and everything in between.

At first, my blog was basically complaints, but then I realized nobody wants to sit there and read about my whining. Plus, I'm really not THAT negative a person. Enjoy.

You Can't Handle The Truth!

As many of you know, I recently had a guest column published in the Daily. However, I haven't had time to post it on here. Actually, I was just too lazy to. So here is is:

February 22, 2006

Ignoring the self-segregation Rather than attacking a columnist, student organizations should handle the truth.

By Ayah Helmy

Maggie Habashy’s Feb. 13 column, “Self-segregation at Coffman Union,” was truthful and tactful. She wrote that she believed Coffman’s second floor, which is filled with student groups, is not fulfilling its purpose: to bring different people together. She wrote of her feeling that instead of promoting awareness for different causes, these groups were furthering their exclusivity. And as a person who’s been here three years, she has enough experience to support her argument. I put down the Daily that day, proud that someone was finally saying something about this. Unless you are involved with a certain student group, if you step foot inside their premises, you should be ready for some major discomfort. Soon, though, I was hearing a buzz around me that the student groups mentioned briefly in the article were angry about it. There was even talk of orchestrating a meeting with the columnist.

I was appalled by this behavior. I expected the leaders of student groups in general — specifically those mentioned — to gather their groups together and try to come up with a solution to make their student group more approachable. Naturally, if I feel uncomfortable going into a space, then why would I spend time trying to understand what it is there for? This should have been a wake-up call, not a reason for them to attack a columnist from your campus newspaper. Give me a break!

The reason this uproar, if you will, occurred is that people simply can’t handle the truth. Once it is told, there is always an inherent defense in one’s reaction. It is a person of character who can rise above the initial reaction and ask why. This scenario briefly reminded me of the Seinfeld episode about truth when George’s girlfriend ends up putting herself in a mental facility because he told her she was pretentious. As much as people say, “Tell me why; I want to know,” — they just don’t.

Wouldn’t it just be easier if people could just give and receive truth without falling apart? A major flaw such as not fulfilling one’s purpose seems important enough for truth. If your friend was going commando and her fly was down, wouldn’t you tell her? Surely you wouldn’t leave her walking around for the entire world to see; instead, you would fix the situation before any more damage was done.

If truth were such a bad thing, why do we strive for it and demand it from others? Wouldn’t relationships survive longer if one person slipped up one drunken night and didn’t tell their significant other about it? Wouldn’t we sleep more soundly if our government continued to keep immense amounts of information from us?

If truth is so damn good, why do we shy away from it when it faces us? If truth is a homeless man with no legs sitting on the sidewalk against a wall, then why do we turn our heads and look away when we see him? How can we fix something if we don’t know what it is? We can’t just leave the big elephant in the room all the time. We need to speak up and take matters into our own hands.

No wonder there are so many problems in the world. We see a commercial about poverty in Africa and we change the channel. We see a man handing out fliers about children being prostituted and sold into slavery by the hundreds of thousands in Uganda and we try to sneak past him without making eye contact. If you make contact, you have to take the flier from his hand.

As for the student groups, I do agree with Habashy that even if a large “super group” was formed, people would naturally gravitate to “their kind,” whomever that may be. But the problem should be addressed either way. The fly should be zipped up before the problem gets any worse and the animosity between different student groups deepens.

I don’t fully comprehend why these student groups got so riled up in the first place. Habashy did not list them and say “I was egged when I walked into the following places.” She made a comment about a comprehensive problem in our school community. She shouldn’t be faulted for that; she should be commended for bringing the issue to light.

We should make poverty history. We should grasp that Uganda flier firmly. We should look the homeless man in the eye and apologize for his state of affairs. We should stare truth in the face. Only by doing that can we improve our situations and the situations of those around us.

Slobodan Milosevic and wherever that leads....

So I'm sure you all have heard about the Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic's death. And to tell you the truth, I'm having a hard time feeling bad for him. This guy carried out a massive genocide, practical slavery, humiliation and more against a) upwards of 100,000 of our Bosnian Muslim brothers and sisters b)200,000 Croatians c) upwards of 800,000 Kosovo Albanians. To the Serbians, he is known as the man who saved them from their "enemies". To the Western media, he is the Butcher of the Balkans. And to me, he is a now-helpless man waiting for Allah's judgement.

I think that perhaps because most of the information I attained about his death is from the BBC, but I feel a bit indifferent about him (for those of you who haven't heard or read British news, it is a lot drier than ours. More matter-of-fact, which I like). Normally, I would have felt a more irraional hate for a man like Milosevic.

One thing kind of scares me, though. WHAT THE HELL WAS ANYONE DOING ABOUT THIS?

Answer?? NOTHING!

Sure the UN raised awareness and did whatever, but it was sitll happening. It was happening till the year 2000. TWO THOUSAND! We tend to dismiss the word "genocide" and bequeath it to Hilter and no one else. But genocide is still happening right now in parts of Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia. Don't think it is restricted to those "far away places." A mild "racial cleansing" is happening right here. But we just call it the justice system. Don't be naive enough to think that the way our society is orchestrated ensures "life, liberty, and happiness" for everyone.

I just wanted him to face what he did instead of get the easy way out and die. But some may think about this scientifically and say his doings are nature's way to resist population expansion. Maybe that's just me applying Bio 1001 to real life where it isn't needed. But every few decades, some crazyass comes into power and starts killing masses of people. Environmental resistance. Right? I need to rephrase that: "Correct?" Because even if it's correct, it doesn't make it right. Just some food for thought.

Most of you won't really care to read this, but this link leads to the UN's account of the case against Milosevic and his cronies in the Hague.

How do you live your life?

How You Life Your Life
You have a good sense of self control and hate to show weakness. You're laid back and chill, but sometimes you care too much about what others think. You tend to have one best friend you hang with, as opposed to many aquaintences. You tend to dream big, but you worry that your dreams aren't attainable.

Pretty true, I guess. Try it out and let me know how accurate yours is.

Attention

I just wanted to point out my friend Ramla's latest blog entry, just in case you don't know her. She offers insight on the book called "The Trouble with Islam Today". Enjoy.

Also take a look at the commentary underneath it. It is quite enlightening.

The Anti-Love

"What is love?" is a good question to ask. But you'll get a multitude of answers even from a single person. What is the opposite of love? Traditionally, you'd hear "hate". But that's not true. Primetime television is a lot more thoughtful than even I thought. Last night, I was watching Desperate Housewives with a good friend and Marcia Cross' character insightfully "Hate isn't the opposite of love; indifference is. Hate means that I still have a connection with you." Good gravy, Marcia!!! She blew me away (even though I feel that if I try and touch her face, it'll be hard... I dunno why. It looks waxy). I've heard over and over again that there's a fine line between love and hate, but it didn't really click til last night's DH episode. This is SO FRIGGIN TRUE. I was thinking about it, and there are a few people who I am no longer friends with, but I had a long history/deep connection with and I tell myself I shouldn't care about anymore, but I do. It's not even like I want to be friends with these people anymore because I know how treacherous they can be; however, I still find myself being attentive to any conversation that comes up about them. Then after I hear this conversation, I obsess about it to anyone I can trust who'll listen. I can also understand how the glance of indifference from a spouse hurts a lot more than a slap of anger or jealousy. Ah... suddenly a lot of things make sense that I couldn't fully understand. Thank you, ABC. LOL Anyway, I thought I'd share the revelation with everyone.

Quranic Equilibrium

I got this in my email a few days ago, thought I'd share:

Very interesting findings of Dr. Tariq Al Swaidan might grasp your attention:

Dr.Tarig Al Swaidan discovered some verses in the Holy Qur'an that mention one thing is equal to another, i.e. men are equal to women. Although this makes sense grammatically, the astonishing fact is that the number of times the word man appears in the Holy Qur'an is 24 and number of times the wordwoman appears is also 24, therefore not only is this phrase correct in the grammatical sense but also true mathematically, i.e. 24 = 24.
Upon further analysis of various verses, he discovered that this is consistent throughout the whole Holy Qur'an where it says one thing is like another. See below for astonishing result of the words mentioned number of times in Arabic Holy Qur'an:

Dunia (one name for life) 115...Aakhirat (one name for the life after this world) 115

Malaika (Angels) 88...Shayteen (Satan) 88

Life 145 ...... Death 145

Benefit 50...Corrupt 50

People 50 .. Messengers 50

Eblees (king of devils) 11...Seek refuge from Eblees 11

Museebah (calamity) 75...Thanks 75

Spending (Sadaqah) 73...Satisfaction 73

People who are mislead 17...Dead people 17

Muslimeen 41...Jihad 41

Gold 8...Easy life 8

Magic 60 ...Fitnah (dissuasion, misleading) 60

Zakat (Taxes Muslims pay to the poor) 32... Barakah (Increasing or blessings of wealth) 32

Mind 49 ...Noor 49

Tongue 25 ...Sermon 25

Speaking publicly 18 ...Publicising 18

Hardship 114 .... Patience 114

Muhammed 4 ...Sharee'ah 4

Man 24 ...Woman 24

And amazingly enough have a look how many times the following words appear:Salat 5 , Month 12 , Day 365 , Sea 32 , Land 13

Sea + land = 32+ 13= 45
Sea = 32/45*100q.=71.11111111%
Land = 13/45*100 = 28.88888889%
Sea + land 100.00%
Modern science has only recently proven that the water covers 71.111% of the earth, while the land covers 28.889%. Is this a coincidence?

I know you have all gotten these emails. Just postin it for those who haven't.

Some poem

This is a poem I wrote for a creative writing class in ninth grade. I found it in a folder I had in my closet, so I decided to share it. I have no idea where this came from. It's not like I was having a big whirlwind romance in ninth grade.

An unfortunate incident,
A particular medium.
Suddenly, we are together.
You distinguish me from the crowd
Without having seen me.
I noticed you gazing at me and
I recognized your face.
It is familiar without a reason.
How did I know you?
I knew you in a previous life.
We were lovers or friends.
We were siblings or in-laws.
We were connected and
We still are.

The connection persists
But no one has done anything
To strengthen it. It is waning.
I know it will end,
But I want it to last.
In my mind’s eye, you watch me.
You see me thinking of you.
Chaque jour, je pense à toi.
Chaque jour, je veux t’embrasse.
Chaque jour, je sais que tu veux
M’embrasse aussi.
Mais ceci ne passera pas.
Quelqu'un d'autre t’aura à la fin.
Et je saurai ça.
Et j’accepterai ça.

Je te dit « Ne me quitte pas ».
Mais il est en vain.

Ainsi,sois heureux sans moi.

Je penserai à toi.

Translation to last half:
Every day, I think of you.
Every day, I want to kiss you.
Every day, I know that you want
To kiss me too.
But this will not happen.
Someone else will have you in the end.
I know this.
I accept this.

I tell you, “Do not leave me”
But it is in vain.

So, be happy without me.

I will be thinking of you.

The New Abu Ghraib Videos

I'm writing this post while trying to keep my breakfast down. I just watched a British video describing and showing unreleased photos from Abu Ghraib. It is really horrendous. I am not a person with an easily overturned stomach and I was almost gagging at the site of these pictures. They are disgusting views of humanity and I hope they are released in the American media so that these people can see what they sent to happen to innocent people.

I really can't describe how horrified I am at these pictures. And you know what's pissing me off the most? The damn smiles on the faces of those "soldiers". I wanna break those thumbs they held up for the pictures. My question is: Whatthe HELL?! And you know what's even worse? After all this, and after the atrocities they performed, they ring leader was only given 10 years in prison and his whore (better known as the chick with the leash around a grown man's neck AND the chick pointing to men's genitals and laughing in numerous pictures) got 3 years. HOW IS IT NOT LIFE IN PRISON?! They killed so many people and tortured so many others. Does that not matter anymore? These people freak out with some guy kills another guy in a gang shooting, but they give 3 years to someone who tortured and killed innocent people and laughed about it? They should be locked up in an asylum within the prison. I'd rather have Hannibal Lector roaming around than those crazy bastards.

Another thing that pissed me off was that they were wearing their army uniforms when they were being tried. Even though I don't agree with where the army is and why, there are many, many valiant people serving in it, including some of my friends. Those psychotic killers should not be allowed to be wearing the army uniform. They don't deserve it.

The last thing that pissed me off was that the ring leader was asked by the lady who made this video is he had any regrets or apologies and he said no. NO!?!?! I'll show him no. Is he serious? Ten years my ass, for real. I feel like this is Bizaar-o World and everything is backwards. They have police report after police report in the country of people they're tracking down because they're killing people (which I think is gerat, I don't want a psycho loose in my neighborhood), and one thing that could make or break their death sentence is remorse on the stand. This guy has not one tear, one hesitation. NOTHING! NOTHING ON HIS FACE! How is he even human?

If you haven't figured it out, I'm at a loss for words. I know this video has been out for a while, but this is the first time I've seen any of the unreleased pictures and I'm super fricken traumatized, dude. Holy crap.

Let's just pray for justice. That's all we can pray for.

A Great Loss

This post is for a baseball Hall of Famer who touched every Minnesotan kid's life during the time he was playing. Kirby Puckett died today of complications due to the stroke he suffered on Sunday morning.

Let's take a moment to remember the outfielder who caused your face to light up and your heart to soar when he slammed the ball or practically flew to catch those balls everyone thought were a lost cause. A moment for the name that made you jump up from your seat when you heard the announcer cry "KIRBBBBYYYY PUCKEEEEETT!" over the cries of the crowd. A moment for a baseball legend.

The 78th Oscars

Yes, it's 10:03 and the Oscars haven't even been given to the last four or five categories, but I'm still here bringing you up-to-the-moment coverage. Just kidding. I don't think I'm Anderson Cooper or anything. Okay, okay, first, who won?

-Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) as BEST ACTOR.

-Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line) as BEST ACTRESS.

-George Clooney (Syriana) as BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR.

-Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardner) as BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS.

-Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain) as BEST DIRECTOR.

-March of the Penguins as BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE.

-"It's hard out here for a pimp" by 3 6 Mafia (Hustle & Flow) as BEST SONG.

-Crash as BEST PICTURE.

-Crash as BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY.

-Brokeback Mountain as BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY.

Do you really care about the rest??? Probably not. Anyway, the host for the evening was Jon Stewart. He was at, I'm sorry to say, less than his normal hilarity. Was is just me, or could there have been a TINY BIT less Jewish jokes? "Dradle-off"? Come on, Jon!

Just gotta say, for the record, I was 100% pro-Crash all night for every nomination and I'm ECSTATIC that it won best picture and best screenplay. I wish Matt Dillon would have gotten Best Supporting Actor, though. And I thought that the song was way better than the one that won.

To tell you guys the truth, I was expecting Brokeback to win. I didn't want it to, but I was expecting it to. Just for the fact that it's about two gay cowboys. A) Whoever is willing to make that movie and act in it should get some kind of recognition, B) I thought that if it didn't win, everyone's gonna blame it on that it's about 2 gay cowboys and call the Academy biased or something stupid, instead of looking at the actual movie.

As for the acting oscars, Philip, Reese, and George were expected. Rachel Weisz was a pleasant surprise.

Aight, aight, I'm just gonna come out and say it: I felt that the Academy was being completely politically correct instead of objective this year. Seriously, it's like, stop avoiding the movies that are due the recognition because you don't want to be controversial. And I'm not alone on this, I was discussing it with my friend Heidi and she totally agreed with me. Oh, you want an example? Do you really want to be reminded of the 3 6 Mafia incident? For real, the girl singing in the background of that song was annoying as crap and you couldn't even understand the guys rapping. It's like, ARE THOSE WORDS?!!!! I know it was probably just the performance, because the original, studio-recorded song isn't that bad. But the Crash song clearly was the best choice. (All respect to Dolly, too, but it sounds like a bunch of other songs she's made.)

Anyway, that was my Oscar rant. That wasn't even including the fashion part of it. That takes more research, cuz I only watched 30 minutes of the red carpet and it was all basically of the back of Jessica Alba's head. When I look at some Eonline pics, I'll let you know who I think had the top looks.
